7 pts. Trinidad and Tobago (2-1-0, 5:3)
6 pts. Guatemala (2-0-1, 7:2)
4 pts. USA (1-1-1, 6:3)
0 pts. Saint Vincent and The Grenadines (0-0-3, 3:13)
After the surprising loss of the US against Guatemala, now these two teams meet again, this time on American soil. In this group, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines will most likely lose all their matches, and then the fight will be between the other three teams, but the home team did not win so far in these matches. It is true, that the United States were guests in these two games, so now they just need to take two wins at home to qualify. Although the US have a better squad, they always has a tough time when they visit this Central American team. For the past 16 years Guatemala has no victory (till now), but 3 of 4 games finished equal. However, when the United States are host in these matches, the situation changed radically. From 1999 until now, Guatemala has lost 9 of 10 games as a guest of the US, with a goal difference of 2:26! The last two matches ended 6:0 and 4:0 for US! I do not see how the traditions will change and the hosts will lose points in this match. Guests are rejuvenated team, the only veteran in their sguad is Carlos Ruiz, while the United States have much more experienced and better players. The Americans created enough scoring chances to recover and earn at least a tie in Guatemala City but failed to make the most of them. I think that this time the guests will not escape.
“I think it was a lack of focus, concentration, and wrong decisions,” Klinsmann said. “We have to take responsibility for it, every one of us — coaches, players — and move on and get it done on Tuesday.”
Yes, Klinsmann made some puzzling lineup choices and the American defense looked terrible, but now this error will be rectified.
“There’s a sense of urgency tomorrow night because we need three points now,” Klinsmann said. “We need to win this game.”
The coach and players will have to „apologize“ to his fans for this and I expect the US to be like reborn in this match. All are aware that a loss in this match means no chances for qualify. Assuming Trinidad and Tobago beats lowly St. Vincent and the Grenadines, defeat would leave Klinsmann’s team five points behind Guatemala with only two matches remaining (and match for Guatemala against St. Vincent and the Grenadines plus many possible points for Trinidad and Tobago against Guatemala at home). A draw won’t make things much easier. For me this means a clear victory for the US. Goal difference is also important, especially in this situation, so I expect a victory by more than one goal difference for the United States.
My call is USA -1.25 (AH)
